As human beings, we all anticipate a day when we shall fall sick. Sickness of whatever magnitude presents a hardship which we all try to rid ourselves off. Once we fall sick, we fail to carry out our daily chores and being a hardship, life becomes uneasy. The prophet (SAW) has encouraged us to seek treatment from sickness in order to keep our bodies healthy so that we can easily and effectively carry out our duties to Allah Ta’ala. However, seeking sickness  treatment in our modern days can prove to be overly expensive and beyond the reach of many Malawians.

Unfortunately, anticipation of difficulties related to illness provides fertile ground for some sections of the society to extract the hard earned financial resources from the people through unlawful means. Many people have fallen prey to sickness cover or medical insurance schemes which present strict regulations in accessing benefits to the members and at the same time charge high and discriminatory premiums. In the event surplus funds are realised, these   schemes forfeit them without any regard to the contributors. Exclusion of pre-existing and related conditions from sickness/medical coverage is another aspect of unfairness practiced by these medical insurance schemes. Gambling, riba(interest) and uncertainty in financial dealings are the rule of the day, despite being contrary to Islamic religious dictates.

To the contrary, Islam treats the sick with great respect and merit. The prophet (SAW) once said that when Allah wants to be good to someone, He tries him with some hardship. (Bukhari and Muslim). Abu Hurrairah also reports that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, “For every misfortune, illness, anxiety, grief, or hurt that afflicts a Muslim, - even the hurt caused by the pricking of a thorn – Allah removes some of his sins”. In fact, Muslims are encouraged to ask the sick to pray for them. It is therefore imperative that a sickness cover guarantee scheme should take central cognizance of these factors when setting up in order to effectively benefit mankind.

Takaaful Mw has presented an alternative to these practices by emphasizing on the principles of cooperation and solidarity, protection and sharing responsibilities in all sickness  guarantee dealings with the aim of attaining mutual benefit on one hand and spiritual rewards on the other. Takaaful Mw declares from the outset that all contributions made by contributors/participants are fore-mostly donations or voluntary sadaqah (zakat ut-tatawwu’) from which benefit starts from self, then relations and then the wider community. Accordingly, there are no hind dealings with the surplus funds/contributions realised at the end of the year. The process of shura(consultation) is employed to decide on the best use of the surplus funds, “ ....... and consult them in the affairs (of the moment). Then when thou hast taken a decision, put thy trust in God.” (Al Imran 3:159)

The Annual General Meeting (AGM), the Board of Directors and management (secretariat) form the core structures responsible for the effective implementation of Takaaful Mw operations.

Takaaful Mw does not envisage success in any of its operations if Fear of Allah Ta’ala does not form the linchpin in all stakeholder dealings.
